2025, JUNE 05 – Singapore international Safuwan Baharudin has revealed that his time at Selangor FC may be drawing to a close, despite having a year left on his current contract with the Malaysia Super League club.
In a candid and emotional admission on Raushan Says / The Final Whistle, the 33-year-old centre-back shared that he has been informed by Selangor’s coaching staff that he is no longer part of their plans for the upcoming season. With his future up in the air, Safuwan is now exploring options — whether in Malaysia, back home in Singapore, or elsewhere abroad.
Widely regarded as one of Singapore’s finest defenders of his generation, Safuwan has enjoyed a decorated career across Southeast Asia. From his formative years with the LionsXII, a brief stint in Australia’s Melbourne City FC, to his spells at PDRM FC, Pahang FC, and most recently Selangor FC, he has earned a reputation as a composed and dependable presence at the heart of defence.
Now, however, he finds himself at a crossroads.
The uncertainty has taken a toll. Safuwan admitted that the news left him disheartened, prompting him to deactivate his social media accounts and take a step back to prioritise his mental well-being.
Selangor FC are scheduled to report back for pre-season training on 23 June, but Safuwan remains in limbo, unsure of what lies ahead.
A return to the Singapore Premier League remains a possibility, although top-tier opportunities are few and far between.
While his next move remains unclear, Safuwan’s commitment to the game has never wavered. His openness provides a sobering glimpse into the emotional challenges faced by professional footballers — where even proven contributions may not guarantee continuity, and careers can change course at a moment’s notice.
