2025, JANUARY 03 – Former Japan international midfielder Yojiro Takahagi, 38, has officially announced his retirement from professional football. The Fukushima native made the announcement on 3 January via his official Instagram account, bringing an end to a career spanning over two decades.
A Remarkable Journey
Takahagi began his career in the youth system of Sanfrecce Hiroshima and was promoted to the first team in 2003. Over the years, he became a key figure in the squad, contributing significantly to Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s back-to-back J1 League titles in 2012 and 2013. His professional journey also included a loan spell with Ehime FC in 2006.
In 2015, Takahagi ventured abroad, joining Western Sydney Wanderers FC in Australia in January before moving to FC Seoul in South Korea in July. In 2017, he returned to Japan to play for FC Tokyo. Later, in July 2022, he joined Tochigi SC on loan, and the move became permanent the following year. In 2024, Takahagi expanded his career overseas once again, signing with Albirex Niigata FC (Singapore).
Stint with Albirex Niigata (S)
Takahagi made 13 appearances for Albirex Niigata (S). In October 2024, he requested to leave the club for personal reasons. His contract was mutually terminated, and he played his final match on 23 November, against Young Lions at Jalan Besar Stadium. Takahagi captained the side to a 1-0 victory, marking a fitting end to his playing career.
International Career
Takahagi earned his first call-up to the Japan national team in July 2013, making three appearances for the Samurai Blue. Domestically, he left an indelible mark, playing 325 matches in the J1 League and scoring 25 goals. In the J2 League, he featured in 137 games and scored 19 goals.
