SINGAPORE, 2025, JULY 02 – The Singapore Premier League (SPL) will undergo a series of major structural enhancements ahead of the 2025/26 season in a bid to raise competitiveness and strengthen developmental pathways for local players.
Among the key changes is the adoption of a three-round league format with eight teams, resulting in 84 matches across the season. Kick-offs will be scheduled between Fridays and Mondays at 7:30pm to maximise fan engagement.
The foreign player quota has been expanded, with clubs now allowed to field up to seven foreign players simultaneously—an increase from the previous limit of six per matchday squad. At least four local players must be on the pitch at all times, preserving opportunities for Singaporean footballers.
A significant overhaul comes in the form of SPL2, a new developmental competition that replaces the existing Under-21 league. Clubs will register a single, integrated squad of 36 to 50 players for both SPL and SPL2, including at least 25 Singaporeans. SPL2 matches will take place between Monday and Wednesday, with each team required to field six local players (four U23) at all times, while also allowing senior players to regain fitness or form.

To incentivise performance, the total prize pool has been increased to $600,000, more than double the previous allocation. Champions will now receive $200,000, while second place will earn $150,000, with prize money extended down to sixth place.
These changes aim to bolster the domestic football ecosystem while aligning with long-term national team objectives. “By raising the competitive threshold and integrating development with top-tier football, we are setting the stage for sustained progress,” said the SPL in a statement.
The 2025/26 season will begin on 16 August with the Community Shield clash between Lion City Sailors FC and BG Tampines Rovers FC, followed by the league’s opening round on 23 August 2025.
