2025, JANUARY 25 – Manchester United FC have officially announced that Brazilian winger Antony has joined Spanish side Real Betis Balompié on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, subject to international clearance.
Antony, 24, travelled to Spain earlier today to finalise the deal, which includes a clause ensuring regular first-team football. Reports suggest Betis will cover a significant portion of the player’s wages, with no option or obligation to buy included in the agreement. Should Betis fail to provide Antony sufficient playing time, they will reportedly face financial penalties.
The move follows a challenging spell for Antony at Old Trafford since his £81m arrival from AFC Ajax in 2022. Despite a promising start, scoring in his first three Premier League games – including one against Arsenal FC on his debut—the winger struggled to maintain consistency. Over 38 appearances last season, Antony played a key role in United’s FA Cup triumph, including a crucial goal in the 4-3 quarter-final victory over Liverpool FC.
This season, Antony has made 14 appearances across all competitions, scoring once in the Carabao Cup opener against Barnsley FC. However, he has largely been used as a substitute under manager Ruben Amorim, who had initially expressed a desire to keep him in the squad.
Real Betis, currently ninth in LaLiga and competing in the UEFA Conference League, will be Antony’s new home for the rest of the season. The move reunites him with Betis, whom United faced during their pre-season tour in the United States, with Antony featuring in a 3-2 win.
United extended their well-wishes to Antony, stating: “Everybody at United would like to wish Antony the best of luck for his spell in Seville.”
With this move, Antony has a chance to rediscover his form and confidence under the guidance of Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini.
