HASSAN SUNNY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

SINGAPORE, 2024, AUGUST 18 – After a remarkable journey spanning over two decades, Hassan Sunny has officially retired from the Singapore national team.

Debuting on 18 February 2004 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against India, Hassan quickly established himself as a reliable presence between the posts. Despite spending much of his early years as a substitute for Lionel Lewis, he seized his opportunities whenever they came.

Memorable moments include a stellar performance against Saudi Arabia during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and his heroics against the Brazil Olympic Team in 2008, where he made stunning saves against stars like Diego and Alexandre Pato.

In 2014, Hassan proudly captained Singapore on the 9 September in a goalless draw against Hong Kong, showcasing his leadership and passion for the team.

He earned his 75th cap in September 2018 against Mauritius and reached the coveted milestone of 100 caps on 24 September 2022, in a Tri-Nations Series match—fittingly, against India, the same team he faced on his debut.

Hassan’s standout performances continued into the 2020 AFF Championship, where his heroic displays earned him a place in the “Team of the Tournament,” cementing his status as one of the best to ever represent Singapore.

One of the most unforgettable moments came during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against China, where his penalty save against Wu Lei helped Singapore stage a dramatic comeback. His outstanding performance in that match endeared him to Chinese fans, who showed their appreciation by supporting his business and greeting him warmly during a trip to Shanghai.

Today, on 18 August 2024, Hassan announced his retirement from the international stage via his social media platforms. His dedication, hard work, and unforgettable performances will always be cherished by Singapore football fans.

Thank you, Hassan Sunny, for the memories, the passion, and the countless saves that inspired a nation.
