2026, JANUARY 05 – Manchester United FC have confirmed that Darren Fletcher will take charge of the first team on an interim basis for Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Burnley FC, following the departure of head coach Rúben Amorim on Monday.
A familiar figure at Old Trafford, Fletcher spent 13 years at the club as a player, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson. He later featured in the Premier League for West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City FC, making a total of 341 top-flight appearances.
This season, the former Scotland international has been in charge of United’s Under-18 side, overseeing 14 matches in the Under-18 Premier League and one FA Youth Cup tie. Since returning to the club in October 2020, Fletcher has held several roles, including technical director and first-team coach.
Off the pitch, Fletcher is also the father of twins Jack and Tyler Fletcher, both members of Manchester United’s first-team squad. The pair were unused substitutes in Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Leeds United FC.
Fletcher becomes the fifth former Sir Alex Ferguson-era player to serve as Manchester United’s interim manager, following Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
It remains unclear how long Fletcher will be in charge. After Burnley, United face an FA Cup tie at home to Brighton & Hove Albion FC, followed by a demanding run of Premier League fixtures against Manchester City FC, Arsenal FC, Fulham FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC.
