PSSI ANNOUNCES TERMINATION OF SHIN TAE-YONG’S CONTRACT AS INDONESIA NATIONAL TEAM COACH

2025, JANUARY 06 – PSSI chairman Erick Thohir officially announced the termination of Shin Tae-yong‘s contract as the head coach of Indonesia‘s national football team on 6 January, 2025. Despite Shin’s contract extending until 2027, PSSI made this decision following a comprehensive evaluation of the team’s performance and the need for a more effective leadership approach. Erick explained that the team required a coach capable of better implementing strategies agreed upon by the players and fostering improved communication.

Erick clarified that the decision had already been communicated to Shin by national team manager Sumardji, and that Shin had received the official letter of termination. Erick also revealed that a replacement coach had already been found, with the new hire set to arrive on 11 January, 2025, and a press conference scheduled for the following day. In his statement, Erick emphasised the importance of selecting a coach who not only demonstrates strong leadership but also values teamwork in the coaching process. He further added that the new coach would be supported by a high-quality assistant, signalling a commitment to strengthening the team’s coaching staff to address any shortcomings.

Reflecting on Shin’s tenure, Erick underscored the importance of the national team and its long-term goal of qualifying for the World Cup. He reiterated that the team belongs to Indonesia and that the primary focus should be on consistent results, rather than any individual or specific coach.

Shin Tae-yong’s nearly four-year stint as the head coach of the Indonesian national team was marked by significant accomplishments. Under his leadership, the team finished as runners-up in the 2020 AFF Cup and secured the bronze medal at the 2021 SEA Games. He also led Indonesia to second place in the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup and helped the team reach the group stage of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup. More recently, Shin guided Indonesia to the semifinals of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup, secured a spot in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, and made history by leading the team to the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Throughout his tenure, Shin managed a total of 57 senior national team matches, 21 U-23 matches, 14 U-20 matches, and 18 U-19 matches.

Erick expressed his gratitude for Shin’s contributions to the team’s development and success, despite the decision to move in a different direction. The appointment of a new coach marks a new chapter for Indonesian football as they continue to pursue their goal of World Cup qualification.
