BORUSSIA DORTMUND SACK NURI SAHIN AFTER POOR RUN OF RESULTS

2025, JANUARY 22 – Borussia Dortmund has parted ways with head coach Nuri Şahin following a string of disappointing results, leaving the club struggling in the Bundesliga and eliminated from the DFB-Pokal. The decision comes after Dortmund’s 2-1 loss to Bologna FC 1909 in the UEFA Champions League, marking their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

Sahin, who took charge in June to replace Edin Terzić, had hoped to spearhead a new era for the club. However, with Dortmund sitting 10th in the Bundesliga and winning only once in their last nine games, the management decided to act.

“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season,” Sahin said in his farewell statement. “I wish this special club all the best.”

Sporting director Lars Ricken expressed regret over the decision, emphasising the club’s appreciation for Sahin’s efforts. “We hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end believed in achieving a turnaround together,” Ricken said. “This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Sahin, a former Dortmund player and club icon, was tasked with revitalizing the squad after Terzić’s tenure, which culminated in an unexpected run to the Champions League final last season. Despite their European exploits under Terzić, Dortmund’s league form had faltered, with a fifth-place finish narrowly securing a Champions League spot.

While Sahin found some solace in Dortmund’s Champions League campaign this season, the defeat in Bologna, where the team squandered a lead by conceding twice in two minutes, proved to be the final straw.

The search for a new head coach now begins as Dortmund looks to salvage their season and reignite their domestic and European campaigns.
